For most organizations this will cause significant delays, making schedule attainment nearly impossible. Instead the effects are dealt with as the project progresses, requiring huge effort to meet the demands of the schedule. The net effect is the amount of time and resources needed to complete the project will balloon. This will impact not only the project of immediate concern, but all other projects as well. Loanwords from 12+ Unexpected Languages Loanwords from 12+ Unexpected Languages Loanwords from 12+ Unexpected Languages By Mark Nichol Language chauvinists in the United States who believe that English is being polluted by other tongues should pause to consider how few words in our language actually derive from Anglo-Saxon, the predecessor of Modern English. One survey determined that only one-fourth of the words in English come from its linguistic ancestors. That total is exceeded by words directly from Latin (including medical, scientific, and technical terms) and from Latin’s collective daughters, such as French and Italian: Each source accounts for about 28 percent of our vocabulary. Greek contributed another 5 percent, proper names are responsible for another 3 percent, and all other languages combined add up to less than 1 percent. But what a rich slice of the pie that last sliver is! Even though English already had a word for many of the concepts those foreign-born terms represent, the language is always generous when it comes to making room for synonyms, which often acquire distinct connotations. I’ve omitted examples from the usual suspects, but check out these terms adopted into English from less-obvious languages, language groups, and regions: 1. Afrikaans Contributions from the South African language descended from Dutch include apartheid (â€Å"apartness†), trek (a long journey, originally one on foot), and names of indigenous animals such as the aardvark (â€Å"earth pig†) and the meerkat (â€Å"lake cat†); scoff, from which English derived scarf (in the sense of â€Å"to wolf down†) and wildebeest (you figure it out) are from a forerunner of Afrikaans called Cape Dutch. 2. Czech Pistol is said to have derived from the Czech word pistala (with several diacritical marks omitted here), though the name of Pistoia, a city in Italy, may have been the inspiration. Howitzer comes from the word for a catapult. Robot, from the Czech word for drudgery, was introduced in a play. But don’t associate the Czechs exclusively with war and toil, they, not the Poles, as is widely believed, coined the dance name polka (â€Å"little half†). 3. Hungarian Coach, from kocsi, derived from the place name Kocs, is taken from Hungarian in both its noun and verb forms. Saber comes from szablya. The names for the dog breeds komondor, puli, and vizsla are all of Hungarian origin, as are the names for goulash and paprika. 4. Irish Galore comes from go leor (â€Å"til plenty†). Other borrowings from Irish include glen (â€Å"valley†), phony (fainne, â€Å"ring†), slew (sluagh, â€Å"a large number†), and whiskey (uisce beatha, â€Å"water of life†). Scots and Scottish Gaelic provided many more words, including the obvious bard, clan, and plaid and the unexpected pet and trousers. Of indeterminate Gaelic origin are brogue (the shoe, not the accent; that’s definitively from Irish), hubbub, and smidgen. 5. Malay This South Asian language has given enriched English with amok, bamboo, compound, gingham, gong, junk (boat), launch (both the noun meaning â€Å"boat† and the verb and noun referring to setting off), and paddy, and the animal names cassowary, cockatoo, gecko, orangutan, and siamang. 6. Maori This language from New Zealand gave us the animal names kiwi, mako (shark), moa, and tuatara. 7. Scandinavian Norwegian contributions include the geographical terms fjord and floe, and ski, plus slalom and telemark (from a place name), as well as the animal names brisling (a fish), krill (a relative of the shrimp), and lemming (a rodent). Swedish words used in English include ombudsman, smorgasbord (â€Å"sandwich table†), tungsten, and fartlek, the unfortunate name for a training technique for runners that has nothing to do with flatulence. These words borrowed into English cannot be traced to a particular Scandinavian language: cog, flense (to strip blubber), flounder, lug, maelstrom, midden (kitchen-waste heap), mink, nudge, rig, snug, spry, and wicker. Dozens more entered English from Old Norse over a thousand years ago, including such basics as anger, ball, and cake. 8. Tagalog The original language of the Philippines loaned us boondocks (bundok, â€Å"mountain,† or bunduk, â€Å"hinterland†). We also have Tagalog to thank for cooties (kuto, â€Å"head lice†). 9. Tamil The language originating in India has shared catamaran (â€Å"tie up wood†), cheroot (â€Å"roll,† or â€Å"rolled†), corundum (â€Å"ruby†), and pariah, plus the food names curry (â€Å"sauce†), mango, and mulligatawny (â€Å"black pepper† and â€Å"water†). Various languages of India besides the major players Tamil and Hindu also contributed atoll, bandicoot, bungalow, calico, mongoose, pajamas, polo, and verandah. 10. Ukrainian This Slavic language contributed steppe, plus the food names borscht (beet soup), kasha (porridge), and pierogi (stuffed dumpling). 11. Welsh Welsh, harsh looking but mellifluous, is the origin of coracle (boat), crag (rock), cwm (valley, related to English combe), and likely flannel. Literary Elements in Poe’s Writing   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In the writings of great authors it is easy to pick out the literary elements used by them. Edgar Allan Poe is one of these authors. He makes use of the same literary elements in many of his stories. Three of the most used literary elements are irony, antagonists and foreshadowing.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Irony is used very often by Poe. Irony is when something occurs that is the exact opposite of how it should be or seem. Irony varies in that it may be displayed through someone’s actions or an ironic happening. An example of irony in someone’s action are in the Cask of Amontillado is when Montressor repeatedly seems concerned for Fortunato’s health, even though his real intentions are to kill him. It also may be considered ironic that Poe named the enemy of Monstressor, Fortunato. Being that Fortunato means fortunate or lucky in Italian, it is ironic that he is very unlucky in that he his buried alive in a wall.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Antagonist is also a literary element used by Poe is this story. We see how Forunato so ignorantly and thoughtlessly antagonized the questionably insane Montressor. In the Cask of Amontillado, we see foreshadowing in the speech of Monstressor and Fortunato. Multiple Perspectives vs. Single Perspective Approach Essay

The focus of my paper is going to be Pluralism, Monism and Interdisciplinarity in the context of a multiple perspective approach. I will discuss the advantages of taking a multiple perspective approach of viewing things which are, Pluralism and Interdisciplinarity, as opposed to a single perspective approach, which is Monism. Pluralism can be used as the term to define the integration of different values and cultures within a given society. Monism, (comes from a Greek word Monos meaning one) is defined as â€Å"any philosophy that denies that there are many separate beings in the universe† and instead looks at a unified one (James and McDonald). Interdisciplinarity looks at different disciplines, the combination of which can help create something new and different. I agree with both Berlin and Moran that it is better to take a multiple perspective approach. Though people may dismiss multiple perspective approach, I believe that Pluralism is a response to Monism and Interdisciplinarity, being the advancement of knowledge into something better and new in the context of the disciplines that have long become outdated and old fashion and which gave rise to other disciplines. Both Pluralism and Interdisciplinarity are a multiple perspective approach of looking at things. Pluralism as a response to Monism: Monism as defined earlier in the paper is a view of looking at the universe as a unified whole, meaning that it is a singular way of looking at things as opposed to pluralism which looks at things in different ways, the multiple perspective approach. The reason why I agree that it is better to have a multiple way of looking at things is because, as the world keeps changing, societies too change and evolve. New innovations are made, ideas and ideals change and therefore, we cannot have a single outlook on things. People come up with different views, ideas and have their own interpretations to what they believe in and/or agree with. Berlin states â€Å"there is a plurality of ideals, as there is a plurality of cultures and of temperaments† (11). This means that Pluralism is having multiple values, perspectives that people can value more than one thing. Different people have different values and we may not always believe in or agree to them but there is an understanding of why we as human beings, pursuit what we believe in and we may therefore, have some values that are similar. People may have different cultures that they follow and those that are important to them, but this does not mean that they are not aware of or respect other cultures. Monism is the belief that only one set of values is true and the rest being false. This is not true and that is why it is better to have a pluralistic approach as opposed to believing in those who think they know how societies should be arranged or who know what the ways of living should be. Today we are living in a pluralistic society where people around the globe share their knowledge and expertise with each other. The advantage of pluralism is the diversity of cultures which give the freedom of communication between people of different cultures and backgrounds, who come together and work together have the liberty to follow what they believe in as opposed to following those who are in authority and those who think they know it all. Berlin sates, â€Å"true knowledge is knowledge of why things are as they are, not merely what they are† (7). In this day and time, globally, we are seeing a new era emerging where nations that had accepted dictatorship as gospel, are now rebelling and voicing their opinions and liberating their nations. Interdisciplinarity – a multiple perspective approach: Joe Moran defines Interdisciplinarity as â€Å"any form of dialogue or interaction between two or more disciplines† (16). In my opinion what it means is that Interdisciplinarity is the transformation and the organization of knowledge into something new within the context of the disciplines that were already existent but have become obsolete. He points out three main aspects that explain really well the concept of Interdisciplinarity and what it actually does and how it has helped society evolve and transform knowledge for what it was then and what it became. Moran mentions bureaucratization, professionalization and specialization (Berlin, 12). Bureaucratization means a formation of a set of rules and regulations that need to be followed. It can be said that this is similar to what the monists believed about the people who are in controlled and need to be followed but he also talks about professionalization where a pastime is turned into a profession an also specialization sepa ration of areas into discrete areas of concentration. Professionalization and specialization are a contradiction to what the monists believed in because this leads to a freedom of what people were able to do and they managed to transform knowledge into something more substantial than just following rules and regulations that would not allow them to change their ways of thinking as people who had the knowledge were to control and were the ones to be followed. Interdisciplinarity gave rise to different disciplines within the framework of a university where students were given the opportunity to learn more and gain new knowledge and that knowledge was not only limited to a few people. We can say that, Interdisciplinarity is a multiple perspective approach of looking at things, in this context the disciplines that were obsolete and that gave way to the rise of knowledge that was transformed into something new. With this came the rise of natural sciences, social sciences and the humanities that became disciplines in their own because of the different cultures and value systems that are embodied within these disciplines and not just one set of discipline that was to be followed. I conclude by agreeing with both Berlin and Moran that taking a multiple perspective approach of looking at the world and viewing things with different ideas is better than to have a single view of things. This is because a multiple perspective approach brings together different ideas from different mind sets which are more beneficial than ideas of just one person who is in control and who looks down upon people as his inferiors. Today, technology has advanced to an extent that we can get information on our finger tips by just using the internet. Social media such as Facebook and Twitter are the means of communication between people around the world and are much faster as opposed to the old days when the use of telegrams was the norm. News travels fast through these social media outlets than by watching television, or listening to news on the radio or reading newspapers. This is possible due to the fact that multiple perspective approach has allowed different mind sets to come up with and share these innovative ideas. Living a Virtues Life Essay

In the book A World of Ideas by Lee A. Jacob, we come across a wise man Aristotle. He explains that there are two kinds of virtue: intellectual and moral. Our virtue is what makes us different. Intellectual virtues is what we are born with and what we learn in the world and it is our job as humans and what we have inherited that makes our desire to learn more powerful than ever before. We develop wisdom to help guide us to a good life and knowledge leads us to be successful. By reading Aristotle he has given me an insight to what life should be like and how one should life and I agree on some points he make. People should aim for what they desire most in life and go about it in the right way by working hard, but also Aristotle says, â€Å"Happiness involves not only a completeness of virtue but also a complete life time of fulfillment† (704). Aristotle believes that happiness is the ultimate goal in life. You cannot reach ultimate happiness unless we work hard and become successful. Aristotle hits two main points and rules to live by, one being, â€Å"But this point will be consider later by itself makes choiceworthy and lacking in nothing† (699). Which means even when one is down the desires of living life is not impossible to overcome; two being, â€Å"Happiness seems, more than anything else, to answer to this description: for it is something we choose always for its own sake and never for the sake of something else† (699). Which means do what makes you happy be able to continue to do something because one has a passion for it and no one cannot take that away because Aristotle says,†Ã¢â‚¬ ¦those who desires and actions are controlled by reason will derive much profit from a knowledge of these matters† (696). Which mean happiness can be explained in terms of reason; Therefore, do something because it make you happy it will be seen by the choices we make in life. On the other hand, virtue is the concept of something that is good: a virtuous person is a morally good, an admirable person who acts and feels well, rightly, as they should. But as Aristotle points out how virtue can have be incomplete he says, â€Å"for it is supposed that a man may possess it while asleep or during lifelong inactivates, or even suffering the greatest desires and misfortunes; and surely no one would call such a man happy† (698). I believe it means that life is too short not to be happy. Being able to experience a tragedy is a tragedy, but also it is an eye opener to people that life is too short not to be happy. in terms of Plato he examines how life can be an illusion and many are so focused on what they want to see versus reality. We tie this into Aristotle by knowing what is good and bad, what is generosity, honesty, compassion and courage, but individuals twist these meaning around to there benefit, but according to Aristotle these words is what helps one live a virtue’s life by understanding and living through the meanings Living with Aristotle’s views is a way to live one’s life, in my opinion. I believe happiness is not what one has, such as, materialistic things, but it is what is surrounding me, family, friends that is happiness, money is just another factor that helps one live in today’s society. I believe no one should be walked over and be treated bad just because of color, race, height, weight, but I believe with hard work one will be respected regardless of how they look. We all work hard to get somewhere in life. I believe knowledge is power. For example, in today society if you have the knowledge as well as the education you will be able to succeed and lead a virtues life. With education it is just a step forward in the right direction of living a virtues life because as Aristotle explained working hard will take you places he says, â€Å"if he has been educated in a particular subject he is a good judge of that subject; if his education has been well- rounded he is a good judge in general† (695). I believe this means education will make a person well rounded and if one studies a particular subject they are known as an expert in that subject. I believe in order to be successful you have to have high expectations for one’s self, myself included, will take me where I want to go and how I am going to get there, it is just the matter of going forth what I desire most and I will do that by living a good virtues life. I know what I am aiming for, it may not be where I end up, but I do have knowledge, education, and my desires to change this world will take me somewhere greater than I could have ever imagined. Therefore, I believe Aristotle is correct on how we should life. We should work hard and be successful because if one does not work hard then one will not know what they are capable of in terms of how far can they be pushed to reach a goal one has longed for, for so long.
